Woman pleads guilty in vehicular manslaughter of bicyclist

UTICA - 23-year old Jodi Marris originally pleaded not guilty to hitting a man on a bike with her car in September, even though she admitted to being under the influence of several different drugs.

Wednesday she changed her mind and decided to take a plea deal.

Marris was visibly upset as she pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges today.

She had been extended a plea offer by the Oneida County District Attorney's office two weeks ago.

The incident happened last September, when Marris struck Peter Zacek, 48, while he was riding his bike on Route 12 in Deerfield.

Judge Barry Donalty took note of how many drugs Marris says she took on the day of the accident, and how they may affected her ability to drive.

"8 or 9 in the morning?," Judge Donalty asked. "Yes, just Valium," Marris said.

"Was there anything else?" Donalty asked. "The Oxycontin," she replied.

"Ok, when did you take that?" Donalty asked. "At the same time," Marris said.

"And then the marijuana, when did you use that?" the Judge asked. "In the afternoon, 2 or 3," she said.

Marris could face up to two years in state prison. She is due back in court on September 10 to be sentenced.
