Mohawk Valley Edge hoping to get IBM Semiconductor Facility built in Marcy

By EVAN WHITE

MARCY - One day after announcing a $1.5 billion investment by IBM in New York State for several projects, many are asking where IBM's Semiconductor Facility will go.

A spokesperson for Governor David Paterson says this is in the very early stages and no city has been ruled in or out for the semi-conductor center. An IBM spokesperson tells us it will be up to the state to chose where it will go once that decision is made.

Steve Dimeo of Mohawk Valley Edge who has marketed the site since 2006 wants to see this site off of Edic Road in Marcy involved with discussions. The state has already committed $20 million in the 2008 budget for the 300 acre greenfield and will add an additional $140 million in development grants.

The Governor's office had this to say regarding semi-conductor locations: "IBM has facilities all over the map on New York State. I don't think it's a safe assumption to say it's where other facilities are."

You may remember that advanced mico devices passed on the Marcy site in favor of one in Malta, New York in 2006, but called it a world class site. Dimeo says he was not approached by IBM or the state regarding the Marcy site, though he has reached out to both parties in efforts to add it to a list of candidates.

IBM's project includes an upgrade for its east Fishkill facility and an expansion at SUNY Albany. The project is expected to be finished within three years.
