Residents, Management Meet At Kennedy Plaza

PAT BAILEY

UTICA - In the past few months, Kennedy Plaza residents have been through several robberies, a murder and unattended fires. Thursday they said enough is enough, and for the first time, in a while, they met face to face with the people who are in charge of the building.

Residents met with, the company who runs the apartment buildings, C-E-O, representatives from affordable housing, and various city officials. With the recent activity that has gone on at the plaza, security was the main topic.

Those living at Kennedy Plaza asked for another security officer, to assist the one who is at the building. However, more importantly, they want a better security system. A camera currently hangs in the lobby of the high tower, but it gets shuts off at the end of the day when the buildings office closes.

"Some people just walk behind other people and walk right in the door.", said Tanya Smith, a resident of two years."Some don't even live here".

As alarming as that is, one resident went a step further to showcase the need for security, as he jimmyed the front door open with his gym membership i.d. card.

"Some feel they have to stay in their apartments because they don't feel safe enough to come out," said Smith. "That's not right for us because this is our home, this is where we live, we need security."

The deal made Thursday, was residents giving management time to make things change, and in return management promised to keep the residents informed of what is going on.

"So I think what they were looking for, was to address things immediately," said Rob Palmieri, a public safety official with the city of Utica. "A long term plan is something that is going to happen in the next two 2 to 3 months".
