Vietnamese students polish up their English skills at Utica College

By NICOLE ESTAPHAN

UTICA - Utica College has been playing host to some special guests this summer. A couple dozen Vietnamese students are getting a lesson in American culture while polishing up their English skills.

This is just one day of a three week program that brought 25 Vietnamese students to Utica College.

"It is to expose them to an English institution while at the same time expose them to getting acclimated," says Patrick Quinn, Vice President of Enrollment Management.

Acclamation that takes some time, but the teens participating in this program have been learning English in their Vietnamese curriculum, so when asked if English is a hard language to master.

It takes hard work and the students say the more immersed in American verse they can get, the better the words will flow from their lips.

"Try to speaking with us people you hear what they say and then try to repeat again what they say," says Ruby Nguyen.

"To have them the opportunity to converse in English is very important to them. The college is looking to expand their Vietnamese connection, they are in the exploratory stages of developing a satellite campus in Ho Chi Minh City," says summer Programs Director Joni Pulliam.

Now the students have just about a week left in Utica they will be headed back to Ho Chi Minh City on July 23rd.
