Butterflies flock to park in Utica as students help to restore their habitat

By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

UTICA - Butterflies are flocking to Proctor Park in Utica, as local fifth graders help to restore the butterfly's habitat.

For the past couple of weeks, students from Jefferson and John Hughes Elementary Schools are expanding the butterfly garden that was put in a year ago.

Monday, the students dug their shovels into the dirt to plant Elm trees.

The Central New York Conservancy - which is helping the students - says the project not only benefits the kids, but the public as well.

"There's a lot of people who use this park, so it's nice visually to just see changes in the environment in this field of flowers and grasses and things that the butterflies like...and it brings the birds," said Kate Cardamone of the Central New York Conservancy.

The students will be finishing up their butterfly project at the end of the month.
