Tai Chi classes help to relieve arthritis pain

By KRISTEN COPELAND

CLINTON - There is no known cure for arthritis. As bad as the pain may be, the best medicine is exercise. And a local high school is playing host to a Tai Chi class, perfect for those of you suffering from the debilitating condition.

"You have a certain amount of activity your whole life and all of sudden you just cant move - you cant get out of bed, you're in pain. And there's a loss there," said Lynne Falzarano of the Arthritis Foundation of Central New York.

Lynne Falzarano teaches a Tai Chi class every Monday and Wednesday at Clinton High School. She says the slow, relaxed movement increases the range of motion for someone suffering from arthritis.

"Quite a few studies...they've been doing it for a few years now," Falzarano said. "Here in central New York, we've been doing it for a year and half. Great results, excellent results."

And the class is free, thanks to a grant from the New York State Health Department.

"There's no cure for arthritis," Falzarano said. "The best medicine that there is is movement."

Falzarano teaches 42 Tai Chi postures.

"It's great for increasing flexibility, pain management and muscle strength," Falzarano

It's also great for treating depression associated with arthritis, and the lack of mobility that comes with it. Falzarano feels Tai Chi helps the body do what it needs to do to survive.

The classes at Clinton High School run on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of July, and will pick up again in September.
