UTICA - According to the Fire Service Women of New York State there are only four fire camps nationwide for girls.  Utica is not only one of the four, but it is the only one in the Northeast.

The girls that go there are treated just like firefighters, getting some on-the-job training in work that is far from easy.

Firefighters, like the teens, are from all over New York State, working together to build confidence in these young women and improve their sense of teamwork.

Lauren Michaels of Clinton already volunteer at their local departments and she feels that this will give her a leg up on many of the boys interested in firefighting.  "There are some guys in my department and they just joined, they don't go to camp or anything," Michaels said.

Organizers hope that these exercises show girls that they can do whatever they want and that there are plenty of opportunities in fire service for careers.
