New health care plan for volunteer emergency service workers

WKTV News

ALBANY - Fire officials say the number of volunteer firefighters has declined 20% in the last ten years.  But now a new law will give health care benefits to volunteer emergency workers.

The new bill was signed by Governor David Patterson Tuesday, giving volunteer firefighters and other emergency service workers access to the same low-cost insurance other municipal employees use.

Bill supporters feel that the law will help fire departments recruit and retain more personnel.

The law is expected to go into effect in January 2009.
