Oneida County "Agri-Culture" map error may have visitors guessing

By EVAN WHITE

MARCY - Oneida County's new AgriCulture map has a number of events and locations, but a little error may lead to confusion for visitors.

Everyone living there, or passing the town's sign knows where the Town of Marcy is, but if you check out the index on a new Oneida County agriculture map, a typo turned Marcy into "Darcy" in the index.

Marcy is correctly labeled in the county map so that visitors who see it there and cross reference the index number can find it. That said, it is a mistake on what was not a cheap map to produce. Late last year Oneida County received a $49,000 grant for agri-tourism. It went to Cornell Cooperative Extension who produced it according to Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.

"We did this with a grant at this point we have 100,000 out there so it's really tough to go back and pull them all back," says Picente.

The map can be found at local businesses, and inside Pennysaver newspapers. If new state money becomes available, Picente hopes new maps could be produced perhaps as early as the Fall.

But for now, he's confident people will be able to figure it out by looking closely.

Please. Supporting our local economy and celebrating our agricultural wealth is the point here, not human error. WKTV should focus on what this map is intended for and represents for all of us locally: over 150 individual producers and small businesses in Oneida Coutny working each day to contribute to our economy!! This could have been a postive story, and I am saddened, so saddened by the choice by WKTV to take this very OD approach to local news reporting.

There's a really neat process called "Proof reading" Was it the printer's mistake, or the creator of the map?

If I had made that mistake working for a private firm; I would have had to make it right.
