Whitaker named NBC News Washington bureau chief

NEW YORK (AP) - NBC has named a replacement for Tim Russert as head of the NBC News Washington Bureau.

Former Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker will take over the post.

Whitaker joined NBC last summer as senior vice president of news. He'll assume many of the off-camera duties held by Russert, who died unexpectedly last month. As bureau chief, Whitaker will be in charge of NBC News election and political coverage, as well as "Meet the Press."

The network says the 50-year-old Whitaker will also occasionally appear as on-air analyst.

NBC still has not named a permanent host to replace Russert on "Meet the Press." Though he's semi-retired, Tom Brokaw has stepped in through the November election.
