Family of sexual assault victim speaks out

By JOLEEN FERRIS

ROME - The family of a girl who was sexually assaulted speak about the ordeal. For them, there is no rest, just frustration and anger at how an innocent child wound up the victim of such a horrific crime. The child's family can only hope she will recover from this trauma.

They know that even if she does, it is going to be a long, difficult road not only for the child, but for her mother, who relatives say is having an extremely hard time coping.

The child was in the care  of a family friend on Friday when police say recent parolee Louis Leddick, came to visit the woman and wound up assaulting the child in the woods off Mohawk Street in Paris. However, this grandmother's outrage is not only aimed at the man accused of sexually assaulting her 7 year old granddaughter;  she is  also targeting the woman, the family friend, who was supposed to be keeping her safe in the first place.

"I can't understand why they didn't watch her. this one lady knew the guy came out or prison; why did they go upstairs and leave them unattended? but i don't think it's fair, I think they should both be charged with something," the victim's grandmother said.

Police say this story might have had an even more tragic outcome if these three teens did not find and rescue the child.  Tuesday, her family members arranged to meet the young men whom they call their guardian angels.

Louis Leddick is being held at the Oneida County Jail on that parole violation. He has not yet been charged in connection with the child's assault. The case will most likely go to a grand jury for possible indictment.
