Family of sexual assault victim speaks out

By JOLEEN FERRIS

ROME - The family of a girl who was sexually assaulted speak about the ordeal. For them, there is no rest, just frustration and anger at how an innocent child wound up the victim of such a horrific crime. The child's family can only hope she will recover from this trauma.

They know that even if she does, it is going to be a long, difficult road not only for the child, but for her mother, who relatives say is having an extremely hard time coping.

The child was in the care  of a family friend on Friday when police say recent parolee Louis Leddick, came to visit the woman and wound up assaulting the child in the woods off Mohawk Street in Paris. However, this grandmother's outrage is not only aimed at the man accused of sexually assaulting her 7 year old granddaughter;  she is  also targeting the woman, the family friend, who was supposed to be keeping her safe in the first place.

"I can't understand why they didn't watch her. this one lady knew the guy came out or prison; why did they go upstairs and leave them unattended? but i don't think it's fair, I think they should both be charged with something," the victim's grandmother said.

Police say this story might have had an even more tragic outcome if these three teens did not find and rescue the child.  Tuesday, her family members arranged to meet the young men whom they call their guardian angels.

Louis Leddick is being held at the Oneida County Jail on that parole violation. He has not yet been charged in connection with the child's assault. The case will most likely go to a grand jury for possible indictment.

so people writing on this board do you do background checks and know every small detail about the people you leave your children with? better yet - do you even have children? I bet you don't. Until something like this happens to you, you are in no way able to blame the mother or grandmother. Instead why don't you blame the dirtbag that assulted her. Use your heads people.

It's alarmimg that we have kids or young adults in the area that will respond to a blog or defend what someone else may have written before they will get involved helping children out themselves. We all agree that the boys did a great deed. The story is about the little girl, lets make our community a safer place. Get involved, the comment by Cassady R shows that some young people believe that if something good comes from doing something wrong it's ok.

In this case, the blame for what happened to this precious little child is on the molester. I'm confused. Some people posting here want the family investigated and the child removed from the home because she was assaulted? Saying things like that are going to make the parents of child rape victims afraid to report it for fear of losing their kids. That's not right. Rape is a horrible thing, especially when it happens to a child, and it NEEDS to be reported. Don't make people afraid to report these things.

They truly saved her life and should be proud of their actions. The rest of you people need to get a life and stop being so hateful and judgemental to people that you don't know.

This little girl needs to be told over and over again that she can overcome this. No, she'll never be the same, but she does not need to be a victim her whole life. Elizabeth Smart gave People Magazine a great interview a few issues back, and is helping others live beyond such horrific crimes. I am sure that those who have had children never come home would love to have seen them live, and then live beyond this crime. BBsitter did wrong, but then also sounded the alarm that brought the heros.

I cannot believe the cruelty of some bloggers criticizing the family for this tragic event that happened to their little girl. We all make choices in this life and most of the time they are good ones. Unfortunately, this time some had a bad result. That applies to choosing the babysitter, for the babysitter's choice of friends, and for the family's choice to be interviewed on TV. WE all make mistakes. Right now this little girl needs love & peace, not turmoil and accusations.
