Still no leads in Great Ukrainian Catholic Church burglary

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA - The Great Ukrainian Catholic Church on Cottage Street in Utica was broken into Monday.

Four days after the incident there are still no suspects, and two sacred items are still missing.

Father Bundz says he came into mass Monday morning, and found the church had been broken into. After inspecting, he found a chalice and an incense burner had been taken.

Father Michael Bundz says this window, on the side of the Ukrainian Church, was left open to let the air circulate.

His best guess is that someone pushed the screen covering the window in, crawled through, and then let another person in the side door.

Once inside, the burglars broke the tabernacle - the most sacred place in a church, and stole the chalice from inside.

The chalice was gold plated, but Father Bundz thinks the burglars thought otherwise. Also taken was an incense burner.

Both items combined aren't worth more than a thousand dollars, but it's not the dollar amount that bothers Bundz - it's the sacred value.

Since Monday calls of help have been pouring in.

"People from Syracuse...they hear and are very upset," Father Bundz said. "Some people there are sending us some money, for new chalice but we don't need money....but thank people for the open heart."

Father Bundz says he has spoken to the police department since Monday's break-in, and they have told him still at this point they have no leads.
