AWACS take flight

By DAVID DELLECESE

ROME - Just last month it was announced that the Oneida County Airport at Griffiss would once again be put to use for military training. That training includes three E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System Planes, or AWACS planes, flying the skies.

And now that the training has begun to take flight, literally, officials hope that it's just the beginning of a resurgence for the Griffiss site.

While officials right now can't say for sure that any new jobs would be brought to the area by this, they said they believe the military personnel that will be making its way into the area for training missions will still bring a boost to the local economy.

"Some will be based here on a steady basis because of the missions," said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente. "They will be staying in hotels, eating at restaurants, shopping in our stores...partaking in the community. The economic impact is huge for us. But it also gives us a military presence."

"We chose Rome because of the proximity to fighter activity in the Northeast Corridor," said Col. George Mayleben with the United States Air Force. "And also the fact of the outpouring from the community and the New York International Guard. The support they've given us here at the airfield is incredible."

The site will serve not only for the AWACs training flights, but on the ground will serve as refueling stops by military flights going to and from Europe.

"It's important that the military continues to look at where they want to put their missions," said Senator Joseph Griffo. "And in a diversified economy as we're striving for, here in this area, there's a partial federal presence, with Eastern Air Defense Sector and Rome Labs, so I think this augments that now."

Military officials say this is just what they call a "validation period" between now and the end of September, to see how cost effective this site is.

Once they determine that, they'll also be able to determine the site's usage for them in the long term here in Rome.

Should have been around in the late 50's. Fighters could break the sound barrier and booms occured at times. B 52's used the old runways and the approach came right over west side's houses. Many times the noise rolled me right out of bed. And guess what! Loved every second of it. My next door neighbor and friend died in a training accident..rear seat F 106. We loved that family like they were our own. Welcome home.

I live off the North end of the Runway, I assure they are much lower over my house. The minimum pattern altitude for turbojet aircraft is 2000 feet for Griffiss. I am already sleeping through the noise. I love every minute of it. So yes this is what you have to deal with now. Anyways the planes you are talking about aren't even the E-3 AWACS. That was a C-5A Galaxy from Stewart NGB, quite a bit larger than an E-3. If we get lucky they might even move up here too with the Tankers.

I grew up in Holland Patent and loved seeing the military aircraft overhead. I always thought it was very impressive and I'm glad to see some of those planes back in our skies again (although I miss the fighters and B-52's) and I'm glad the Air Force personnel are around and enjoying our community. As far as I am concerned (and most people I know) this is a welcome complment to Griffiss and I agree 100% with Girard A. Plante's comments. Welcome back USAF, and let's hope they stay!

By the way, we also live in Holland Patent and the noise last night at 10PM was just as wonderful! Would you rather have tanks and armed soldiers driving the streets watching your every move like in so many Communist countries?? Just a question to hopefully provoke some reflection. Have a nice, secure day! (And, please, do not think I am being nasty toward you. I only want you to stop and think about it!)

I assume that you are either too young to remember the B-52's, KC-135's and F-16's at GAFB, or that you are not from around here. Either way, the inconvenient noise is very welcome at our house. It is the sound of security in the "land of the free and the home of the brave!" We miss the base as it was and enjoy taking our sons to watch the planes landing. They will surely know and respect what America should be. My advice on the bothersome noise level..deal with it and be more greatful!

Closing Griffiss Air Force Base proved political and shortsighted in 1994. Shortsighted because Griffiss for 60 years was the most strategically essential Air Force base in the Northern Hemisphere. With the shuttering of the Air Force Base a mere 200 miles away in Plattsburgh, why close Griffiss? Politics! Citizens in the Northeast may rest easily with a permanent presence of Griffiss in their daily lives. A step forward both for national security and economics in these difficult times.

I dont know about the rest of you but the noise level yesterday was unbeleivable. The planes flew over Holland Patent several times and very low. Shook the house. Is this what we have to deal with now?
