State cuts leave students in financial limbo when it comes to college costs

By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

UTICA - Things are a little tense at Utica College. The faculty recently learned student financial aid is on the chopping block - and may be cut to reduce the state's growing deficit.

"It could have devastating effects on our programs on our students for some of our students it's going to mean they won't be able to afford coming to college," Flossie Mitchell, director of Young Scholars, LPP

The news from the "Commission on Independent Colleges and Universitie" has directors for the school's various financial aid programs trying to come up with ways to handle the situation...should the outcome not be in their favor.

"At this point, with such short notice, we don't know how we're going to advise our students, because they're going to have turn around quickly and they don't have a lot of avenues open to them," said Johnni Mahdi, Director of opportunity Programs.

If the proposal is passed, the cut would go into effect immediately and that would put 90% of Utica College's student body in financial limbo.

That 90% includes senior Marissa Falitico, who works a part time job and receives TAP funding.

"We only have a week and a half, and we're worried about getting our books right now and our schedules and now we have something else to worry about," Falitico said.

She still plans to see her senior year through, even if there is a cut. But for her and other seniors, it might be a struggle to pay the bills at the end of the year.

The State Legislature meets for a special "economic" session on August 19 to vote on what gets cut from the budget.

But its equally as hard for people who cannot get financial aid in the first place. Just because you make a decent living doesn't mean you can afford 25k a year for your kids tuition either!! especially when you have more than one! These kids will just have to get student loans like many other people. Welcome to the REAL world!!!

Even with aid the students will still have to take out massive loans if they are from the lower class. Nothing is being handed to them. They are just trying to get educated and make a better life for themselves and not be on welfare or struggle if you only have a 2 year degree. I say lets try to help them with their professions in New York State and try to give them decent jobs. They all won't be making 100,000 Their are some very hard working students at Utica College from what I seen.

Hey "WOW"...what do you think the majority of students do?? It sounds like you are disgruntled. I've paid taxes for over 20 years. I don't have a problem with finances going to those who are TRYING to earn a decent education and living instead of sitting around sucking off taxpayers money.

Yes, I agree with "True." Why take away opportunities from people who actually are trying to become educated? In the long run this will help those individuals get betters job, thus stimulating the economy and resulting in fewer people on our horrible and unjust welfare system... Gov. Pattern needs to look at other options because this is surely one that will do more harm than good.

Cut the aid to those who are trying to better themselves so that the worthless bums on Welfare can sit home on their rear ends instead of getting a job.

Just like every thing else. Cut aid so the people that don't want to be on well fare have no choice but to work at B.K Let's try fewer raises for politicians They all need to make over $100,000 a year while we the average worker makes $22,000 if we are lucky even though we are educated. N.Y.S needs to start caring and stop acting like they care. Politicians, workers comp, and wellfare are the only money making opportunities It's no wonder people are fleeing New York!
