Poll: NY voters aren't betting on lawmakers to act

ALBANY (AP) - A statewide poll finds that although the
state's economy appears to be the worst in three decades, most New
Yorkers aren't optimistic the Legislature will act to improve it
during Tuesday's special session.

The Siena Research Institute poll finds nearly two-thirds of New
Yorkers think the economy is the worst since the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. But 55% of those surveyed say that they are not confident or very confident their elected leaders will address the
problem this year.

And the Legislature appears singled out. Gov. David Paterson, who is pushing for action during Tuesday's session, now has his highest approval rating in the poll - 59%.

The poll questioned 627 voters Aug. 11-14 and has a margin of
error of about 4%.
