SUNYIT announces $23.5 million student housing project

By EVAN WHITE

MARCY - SUNYIT announces plans to build more student housing for first year students, it's all part of a $23.5 million project.

President Bjong Wolf Yeigh says a residence hall that will accommodate 250 students will be built by the 2011-2012 academic school year, and the brown building labeled "N-3" is the planned site for the residence hall.

SUNYIT officials cited increasing enrollment as the reason for bringing a third residence hall to the Marcy campus.

The school has suffered operating budget cuts similar to other schools and state agencies this year, though Yeigh says they won't affect these projects.

"The budget challenges are in the operating budget rather than the capital budget," Dr. Yeigh said. "The information that we have received where capital projects will grow and capital will continue."

The school had previously announced a new field house, technology center and a student center.

That's great to invest in our local colleges but the truth of the matter is that we should be putting $$ into our economy and getting jobs for when they get out of college. That is why our young people leave. I have a Bachelor's Degree from SU and I make $27,000. If I go to Arizona, I would be making at least $40,000. Ridiculous that I have leave my home town which I love in order to stay above water.
