College presidents look to lower the legal drinking age

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA - Nearly 100 college presidents across the country have proposed lowering the legal drinking age to 18. As you can imagine, not everyone thinks this is a great idea.

The thought behind 100 college presidents, including the president of Syracuse University, is that a lower drinking age would curb binge drinking.

However, those who work closely with people who have an alcohol problem, say the idea is sending the wrong message.

College presidents from all over the country say binge drinking is their most serious problem, and lowering the age to 18, could change things.

"I'm just saying if we treat these 18, 19, 20 year-olds like adults, they'll act like adults so we need to start having an adult conversation," says Ohio State University President Gordon Gee.

But not everyone age 18 to 21 would act like an adult says the President of the Insight House in Utica.

"Just because the age is lower doesn't make it a better situation and it's a safe thing for people to do," says Insight House President Donna  Vitagliano.

Vitagliano says lowering the drinking age to 18 could bring more serious problems, than just binge drinking.

"We know that kids that start drinking earlier have more of a dependence problem later on end up being an alcoholic, having alcohol dependence problems rather than abuse problems later on," she adds.

Vitagliano says between alcohol poisoning, and car accidents, alcohol kills more teens than any other drug and she predicts by lowering the age, you will not increase the maturity level of teens.

Technically, laws governing drinking age are left up to each state. However, all states adopted 21 as the minimum drinking age after Congress mandated in the mid 80's that any state that allowed drinking under 21 would lose ten percent of federal highway money.

It's true that you can fight for your country at 18, but those individuals are extensively trained before they go fight. 18 years olds will not be trained before they go to a bar for the night. In order to get a license you also have to go through training. We even have to take government/politics classes in high school to learn about the voting process. I think if they lower the age much more education about drinking has to be implemented.

Think about this : your slow cousin, or the moron at the end of the block being able to legally drink, and then probably drive. sound funny at first ?........WRONG!

When I was 18 we were able to drink, and there was not many accidents caused by drinking. "Gramma" was correct in stating that when you got in trouble you had to answer to your parents, which to me was worse than the authorities. You can vote and belong to to the armed services, but cannot legally drink when you are on leave. Should there be an exception to the brave young men and women who protect our country? I say yes.

I always found it funny you can drive, fight for your country, even get married but you cannot buy alcohol. Never made sense to me. The reality is that regardless of the drinking age at the age of 18 drinking is happening. Lets make it legal and allow our resources to concentrate on more important issues.

I am on the fence with this one. If you are gonna lower the drinking age then more $$$ needs needs to be invested in alcohol abuse prevention and treatment. People have a right to do with their bodies as they wish but at the same time we need to protect people so I am up in the air about this one.

I hardly think that Insight House and Donna Vitagliano are credible sources of information on the topic of alcohol and drinking. I know several current and former staff members of Insight House who would state, albeit anonymously, that their chemical dependence / substance abuse programs actually ENCOURAGE drinking and relapses from its clients. Ask Ms. Vitagliano what the success rate of clients who "graduate" her program? Insight House should stick to what it does best ... making money.

I agree with "Donna" above- the law hasn't stopped younger people from drinking- just makes it more of a challenge and therefore more tempting. At some point we have to allow these young adults to be adults. I don't believe that 2 or 3 years makes them much more mature. The big thing is to repeatedly remind them about the consequences of drinking and driving. From what I understand, the European countries that allow drinking at younger ages don't have the problems we do here.

I can remember when the legal age to drink was 18 in NY. And if you were caught drinking b4 that age, it was not such a big deal--maybe your parents might punish you (I know that parents punishing their kids for wrongdoing is an alien thought in today's society--but it DID used to be that way!) I say lower the age for college students with a 3.0 or above average and for anyone in the service. Raise it for everyone else to 25.

I still say NO. Just because they can vote, drive, etc... That does not make them mature just because they were 17 yesterday and 18 today. Parents are still responsible for their kids until the age of 21. I agree with waiting until their 21.

Start treating your kids as adults when they are 14 and by the time they are 18 they might act like adults. Many parents these days are coddling their kids. Let them skin their knees once in a while or they'll never learn. If a person is old enough to be drafted and die for their country, they're old enough to have a beer.

YES THE LEGAL DRINKING AGE SHOULD BE LOWERED. The decrease in drinking related accidents is due to education. It was common for all ages to drink and drive 20 years ago. Now people are more aware of the consequences, and the penalties are much higher. All age groups are drinking and driving less, not just people under 21. The term 'designated driver' has become commonplace now. Having a legal age of 21 has not stopped kids from drinking, it has just changed how they do it!

18 year olds are adults. They go away to college, join the military and die for their country and most importantly can be tried as adults in a court of law. There are many 21 year olds that are irresponsible drinkers!! In my opinion there is not a big difference in maturity between the 2 ages. I have a 21 year old and an 18 year old. Hate to admit...but my 18 year old is more responsible!! If you tell them it is ok for them to drink, they will do it less.

Drinking age should be lowered to 18. Your an adult at 18 and should be held responsible for all your actions. Some people like to say life is not fair and people under 21 should not be allowed to drink. Well what wrong with making the law fair!!! We are punishing all people under 21 because of stupid young people who can drink responsibly? Where is the due process and when did we decide that all Americans under 21 were guilty of being irresponsible beer drinkers. The drinking age all over the w
