Church builds new children's center

WKTV News

UTICA - The Mt. Zion Church on Herkimer Rd. is constructing a new children's center to try and make church a positive experience for kids.

The church's congregation donated $250,000 for the renovations.  There will be flat screen TV's, video games, a pool table, a game show set, and play-pit area.

The church's associate pastor, Michael Servello says, that even though they haven't finished the project, kid's are already enjoying the improvements.  "When parents were trying to get their kids to leave church, they were literally crying," Servello said.  "I just think it's a great thing for kids, when they come to church, to cry when they have to leave rather than because they have to come."

The children's center will be unveiled at a grand opening September 13, at 6 pm, and the 14th at both 9 am and 11 am.  It will be open to the public and there will be lots of food.

From my experience anyone who finds it necessary to blog knives into the back of those we are called to love had better be careful. Harsh words will never turn away wrath, by no means, rather it will do the exact opposite. Words are powerful the can bless or curse. Our words will come back to us both blessings and curses. Lets use our words with love and wisdom. blessings to all!

Sometimes I don’t know what to think anymore of what I see inside as well as outside the Church. We are called to love one another. Why can we not be happy for others. Just because others are doing things different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. If we do not like something, unless it is out right sin let’s stop being so critical of one another. WE ARE THE CHURCH, ONE. What compels us to write such harsh words? i know from first hand of what destruction harsh words can do......

It's decoration! It's decoration that is enticing kids to want to go there and because they are there (willingly), they will learn about God. I don't think people are knocking the learning about God part or whether or not Mt. Zion WANTS to teach kids to love God- people are questioning the means by which they are doing it- expensive technology and an elaborate, yet kid-friendly design. From what I've read here, it seems that people are questioning the money and if it could have been spent better

Consequently those who believe this Children’s Wing to be an unconstructive way to teach the youth about Christ, I would encourage you to first experience it and then your opinion will be founded on actuality. It is my hope that you will see Mt. Zion’s Children’s Wing as a place that educates the youth about Christ with relevant and exciting inventiveness while being established in the Word of God. I am so thankful for the leadership of Mount Zion for having a vision for the future and for this generation. I don't go to this church- I live three hours away- but I can say that I do know the pastors and I know their hearts. They are men of God. They love people. They serve. They give. They care. If you are a parent and are unsure if you want to go to this church, I would say- go check it out! You will be received and loved, as will your children!

In an attempt to understand the recent negative rhetoric regarding the Children's Wing at Mt. Zion I have come to the conclusion that it is not possible. Recent posts in opposition of the Wing are not logical, they are not sound and further they are not founded on anything. No-one who took the time and energy to criticize the project evenhanded their argument with actually experiencing the very thing they are opposing. Logical and intelligent behavior would cause a person to first experience th

I think uptown is a very good thing. There are certain things in the service the pastor cannot preach about because we have ''little ears'' in the room. So I think it's a good i dea and a good program to let these kids thier age get the education appropriate for their age. If the pastor were to preach about protitution or sex and drugs would you want your 5 year old in the room hearing that?.No because they are not old enough for that kind of education. So there you have uptown to take them to

While the amusement park atmosphere is enticing for kids, etc. it's what goes on inside the classes that is most important. And while the kids are learning about God, I don't see how this elaborate set, videos games, etc. will help them to serve God. To me, it's a lot of money and flash that could have been spent in other ways. It's experiences with God that changes kids lives. Send more on mission trips or sponsor more kids to go to camp. A cool set won't work forever.

Why is it not surprising that the nay sayers had so much to say about a local church sacrificially financing the building of a safe haven for Utica's youth to hang out but had nothing to say about the nonalchoholic bar that opened up to entertain our youth.Underage kids were allowed to smoke cigarettes and pot while air humping one another in clothes that left very little to the imagination.Apparently you don't have a problem with thousand's of dollars being used to renovate bars for our youth

We raise our children very simply, wanting to instill in them character and a deep faith in Christ. It is our responsibility as parents. So while Mt. Zion has more technology in the church than we have in our home :), I appreciate that they value children and families and are taking a bold move. Our five children enjoy the slides after church and can discuss the Bible stories and memory verses days later. The gospel is exciting, why shouldn't the environment that delivers it be?

I agree Jesus wore his robe and sandals and His life was simple. Children get enough of this over-stimulation at home and elsewhere; tv, computer, video games, cell phones, toys, all toys, the world is a playland for them now. Church should be the REAL DEAL where they anticipate miracles and healings. This society perpetuates everyone to stay babies playing forever. The pastors are probably texting each other right now. They like games. They speak into peoples' lives, esp. if you got cash.

When I have children if I can bring them somewhere where they learn about God in a fun environment I will. I think you forgot its the kids who matter..wow

This is state of the art for children to learn the Biblical ways of the Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, it cost money, but aren't the future children of our area worth the investment? The children are around the love and Word of God - that's what UPTOWN is all about! All our children grew up in this church and are ALL serving the Lord with passion! And yes, Mt. Zion birthed Compassion Coalition in 2000 and they distribute over 5 million pounds of food and personal care products to 1000's in our area.

As I read the comments of others I feel sad. How come it is necessary to criticize. If Jesus where to ask you what you have done for him lately, what would be your response? "Oh yeah Lord I spent 20 minutes attacking other members of your body online while children in my city went to bed afraid, hungry and feeling unloved/unwanted." I am so excited to see a ministry that is willing to work so hard and make such sacrifices on behalf of children and families. They have done an amazing job and we are so blessed to have "Uptown" and Mt.Zion in our area. Their childrens ministry is top notch in every way. In some churches the childrens ministry is all about baby sitting but not here. It is an awesome place where children are valued! Having a fun, safe learning environment is a great asset to the Utica Area! Great Job!!

I'm amazed by the continuing negative comments. The play area is only used after the children's services and programs have ended. They are continually taught and supervised in an environment that is dedicated to them. As for giving to food banks, well they also established Compassion Coalition that is a very sucessful program that gives away more food than you realize. This is a church that cares and who are more than willing to open their hearts to people.

I was with that church and left because of the standoff attitudes I got from people. I didn't fit in to their standards. When I left no one cared to come and get me or my children and haven't been back since. My children don't get coal at Christmas time and we do celebrate the birth of Christ every year. I don't believe spoiling the children with expensive gift is appropriate to teach them Christ's love. Jesus walked the earth with his cloak and sandles and didn't take material items with him.

It looks like a McDonald's playland. I am saddened that this church can't make church a meaningful place for children without all those expensive toys. Why wouldn't they cry, its an amusement park? It's too bad the parents would rather have the kids play and leave them alone during "adult" church than attend a family church that welcomes children into the family of God instead of send them out to play. Its not even a religious oriented play area!! It's just sad for them.

TV's and video games are NOT what we want our kids doing at church. They do enough of that at home. Stuffed animals and babydolls, lincoln logs, kitchen play areas are fun and also appropriate to teach them life skills. I hope your church rethinks its plans before continuing. Perhaps the money saved could be donated to the local food bank or to a summer camp fund.

Your thinking to old school. You need to grow with the times. And unless you go there you shouldnt judge. I see those kids worshipping God everyweek, dancing and singing and clapping. After the service they get to have some play time... Big whoop... If this is an avenue in which brings in lost people why say no? My heart is for the lost, and this is a great tool to bring them in. Not stuff or uncomfortable and where they can see Jesus thru the joy the kids experience.
