Two former Rome School employees face prison time

By PAT BAILEY

ROME - Two men who used to work for the Rome School District, have plead guilty to several felonies for what police are calling "widespread misappropriation of funds and materials." Now the two face prison time for their actions.

Vito Rizzo is the former Director of Facilities, and William Ruane is the former Supervisor of Grounds, both for the Rome School District.

Both men have plead guilty to three felonies and a misdemeanor between them, after using funds from the buildings and grounds department to purchase items they used on their privately owned residences.

Just a few items both men are responsible for purchasing illegally include a snow blower, a riding lawn mower, a generator, and hot water heaters. with an estimated value of $20,000.

Yet if the felony charges and prison time were not bad enough, both men have also been ordered to pay the school district over $13,000 in restitution.

Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara says the investigation started when Rizzo was initially thought to be stealing copper from the former RFA building.

A grand jury originally dismissed him of those charges. Since that dismissal, McNamara says several members of the public came into help the DA's office with the investigation, which lead to the findings of the other illegally bought items. That ultimately lead to the truth and the guilty plea of perjury, by Rizzo, for the stolen copper.

Both men will by in an Oneida County Court on October 7th for sentencing.
