Manhunt still underway following sightings of hit and run suspect

AVA (WKTV) - A manhunt is still underway for Royce Beck, the man suspected of killing Deborah Royce in a hit and run accident Wednesday. Police came close to finding the man on Friday as two troopers actually saw Beck on his bicycle. He then fled into the woods off of Murphy Road.

State Troopers and Oneida County Sheriff's Deputies swarmed the heavily wooded area, even utilizing a State Police Helicopter to search by air. Eventually, they came out of the woods empty-handed with Beck still on the loose. Police are still on stand-by in the area waiting for another sighting of Beck.

New York State Police Captain Mark Lincoln said,"At this point, I can't tell you there's a specific search going on in any specific region but that we're in the area with roving patrols responding to any calls we get from people in the neighborhood."

The accident happened around 11:00 PM Wednesday on Osceola Road in West Leyden. An autopsy showed Deborah Royce, of Holland Patent, died of massive cranial trauma. Police say she used to date Beck. Other than leaving the scene of a fatal accident, police still are not positive of what, if any, other charges Royce Beck would face.

Beck has been on the loose since the accident. Police also say Beck got a 27 minute headstart before they arrived to the scene. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and does have a history of criminal activity. According to the New York State Criminal Justice website, Beck is a Level 2 sex offender, and was arrested in January 1997 for sexual abuse against a 16 year old girl. He is also said to go by the name of "Edward Beck."

People with information regarding the location of Royce Beck are urged to call New York State Police at 315-366-6000.
