UFC Fighter gets hero's send-off

WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - In 12 days Ultimate Fighting Championship Fighter Matt Hamill, of Utica, will be involved in his biggest match of his career.  But Monday night, before full preparations could set in, Hamill had a hero's send-off out of Utica.

Autographs, pictures, and even a key to the city.  Monday night Matt Hamill was the main event.

Ed Lynch is a big fan of Hamill, but he was surprised when he saw the ultimate fighter in person.  "He looks a lot bigger on TV,  But I'm not going to tell him that in front of his face," Lynch said.

Sam Phou is another Hamil fan, and he's excited about the big pay-per-view.  "I'm looking forward to this fight that is coming up in September and I have no doubt that Matt's going to win that fight," Phou said.

That fight will be the biggest of Hamill's career.  Right now, the man who owns a home in Schuyler, and trains in Utica has a career record of 6-1.  Come September 6th, Hamill will fight a man who is 25-1, former champion and UFC veteran Rich Ace Franklin.

Hamill's boxing coach Tim Greene says that a win in this fight would be a huge step in Hamill's career.

Today, Matt showed appreciation back to his fans.  "The more fans in Utica the more motivated I get," Hamil said.  I really, really want to thank the people for supporting me it's really awesome," Hamill said.

Matt Hammill's fight in Atlanta is September 6th and can be seen on pay-per-view.

but it will be equally satisfying to (hopefully) watch Franklin dismantle Hamill on UFC Unleashed for free in a few months.

Glad you fellows root for a local, I like to think and form my own opinion. The mentions of Franklin's record matter because this is a news story and the facts should be correct and are readily checkable. ABC does his deafness need to be addressed again? I don't care for him mostly from the scenes where he would go 100% in half speed drills. This can result in injuries to your training partner(s). It is a pretty selfish mind set.

Franklin is 23-3, NOT 25-1. He has lost to Lyoto Machida, and Anderson Silva twice. Also, Franklin used to fight at 205. He dropped down to 185 and is now going back up.

Hamill is a great fighter, however i think Rich's stand up and his ability to scramble back to his feet will dominate Hamill. He's just got to much experirnce against the rookie. By the way Franklin's record is 25-3......Good luck Hamill

I think Matt Hamill is one class act! He has great work ethics and deserves everything he gets. To "still" that was Franklin's choice to move up a weight class. I'm rooting for the local and the classiest fighter. Go all the way Matt - we'll all be watching at my home and you will be the VICTOR!

I'd like to see the fight but I'm not digging the nearly $60 dollars for the PPV. Any local bar owners planning to air the fight speak up so I can come to your establishment!!!!

i don't think Matt has a good enough stand up to face Rich. If they go to the ground he will have the advantage. I will be rooting for Matt but I like both of the fighters.
