As school year starts up, Child Advocacy Center sees caseloads increase

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The caseworkers and investigators at the Child Advocacy Center deal with the worst that society has to offer. They have to hear details of child sexual abuse and try and help families recover while building criminal cases against the accused.

We hear a story of child sex abuse on the news-and unfortunately there have been a lot lately-and we shake our heads. We cannot imagine the sordid details and quite frankly--we don't want to.

Yet these case workers and investigators have to. As you can imagine, the potential for burnout here at the Child Advocacy Center is great. Sometimes workers know when they have had enough; other times, their bosses have to tell them.

We spoke to a young caseworker who avoids burnout in the present by keeping her eye on the end result; helping a traumatized child.

"Granted people might be telling me horrible, disgusting things that normal people shouldn't hear or anybody shouldn't hear but I'm focused on gathering information to make a good case," says case worker Amy Malagese.

Many, including local abuse survivors, say that they're glad that the center exists, so that it can be a voice for young victims.

I bet alot of this would stop if the parent where not to busy partying all the time.I see kids not watch all summer. But if something happens then they say why this happen. And watch who around your children does somewhat help.

I hope that anyone who does this sick thing to a child dies of a slow painful death, they do not need rehab, enough with slapping their hands!
