Two Rome nursing homes found to have numerous violations
ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Two nursing homes and rehabilitation centers in Rome had several violations following recent State Health Department inspections this Spring. Betsy Ross Rehabilitation Center in Rome was deficient in proper treatment to heal and prevent pressure, or, bed sores. Another violation in the state's 98 page Deficiency Report for Betsy Ross was in "failure to preserve a resident's dignity:" on March 28 of this year, the Health Department found that a nurse obtained a urine sample from a resident's catheter in a hallway, in public view. All in all, Betsy Ross had 47 standard health violations in this report, as opposed to the state average of 17. They had 50 total violations compared with the state average of 24, and five deficiencies related to actual harm or immediate jeopardy. The state average in that category is one. Officials at Betsy Ross did not return our calls; an individual answering their phone refused to tell our reporter the name of the administrator. Meanwhile, Stonehedge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rome was found to have 31 standard deficiencies, 34 total, and 5 that are considered to be related to actual harm, or immediate jeopardy. The administrator for Stonehedge Health and Rehabilitation - Bruce Gendron - says the serious violation for which they were fined happened in August 2007, and that during a follow-up visit four months later, the state found the violation, which involved the assessment and treatment of a patient's mental condition, was corrected. Gendron adds that an inspection conducted just this month resulted in no serious, fine-able violations.

There is not a SINGLE nursing home in the state that has a daily rate anywhere near that. The latest data (page 6) http://www.nyhealthcarecommission.org/docs/final/appendix4-briefingonltcreimbursement.pdf shows that the Median Daily Medicaid rate for a central New York Nursing Home is $143. NOT $750. And most homes in the state are barely getting by on that. Some have closed. Cna's seem to be "expendible" in nursing, when in reality they are the backbone of it!you try making an RN do our work, for our pay,I assure you that the RN would walk out! Pay CNA's what they deserve, treat them with respect and perhaps they can lure more folks to the job! As a CNA,I made 5.17 per hour for caring alone(understaffed) for 20 residents who had alzheimers. While the RN did paperwork and one meds pass,I had to toilet, clean and dress 20 full care folks for 5 bucks an hour, plus work manditory OT at the directors whim. More staff can be had by improving the conditions for those who do the bulk of the work! These places are waaaay understaffed. Nobody wants to work in them because of the deplorable conditions. Residents sometimes wait on the john for hours after buzzing staff to help them back to bed. The care is horrendous for the amount of money they rob from the elderly. Many of the actions I have read in the comments and in the surveys are deplorable. While it is not easy work, everybody deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and have their safety maintained. That could even be you tomorrow (I've had residents as young as 26), and if it was I bet your tune would change. Many aides do things to their convienence, rather than the person they are caring for. It is a pattern to stop. Flag for moderationWednesday, Aug 27 at 3:02 PM Gosh wrote ...Gee, was that last blog written after it was cabbage night??? The boards, owners and staff of our nursing homes work every day to provide good care for our communities elders. If you want to help, then volunteer like Jim says. I guess if you are going to comment about something maybe you should volunteer in one. I don't see too many people doing that. No nursing home is perfect, but Stonehedge is on an upswing Flag for moderationWednesday, Aug 27 at 10:33 AM In the Know wrote ...First of all the figures in the report are reversed. Betsy Ross had the greater number of citations. Look it up at http://nyhealth.gov/facilities/nursing/survey_summary/pfi0595.htm Also, if you go to http://www.medicare.gov/NHCompare/include/DataSection/ResultsSummary/ResultsSummary.asp you will see Stonehedge only had NINE health citations, not 47 OR 31. This federal website has the accurate info. Lastly, this report for Stonehedge is a year old. The last two surveys were much improved. CNA's and the Nurses are suppose to help the resident of the nursing home, with personal care, eating or bathroom assistance. I do understand that most homes are short staffed, but that does not mean they have to treat the residents with disrespect. Remember that resident could be your parent, grandparent Flag for moderationWednesday, Aug 27 at 7:40 AM a little late.... wrote ...lol the inspection was during the spring. However I'd want to know who instructed this individual at Betsy Ross to not give out the name of the Administrator? Is that not public information? Are they trying to cover something up? Do they even have an Administrator? I wound up cutting it for her myself, after fetching proper utensils! how sad a place! I had a friend in stonehedge..she asked to use the bathroom, during mealtime, and the CNA ,in front of me,refused to take her, saying it was "an act" and she didn't have to really go. Appalled,I took her myself to the restroom, and she indeed did have to go....and the accident she would have had had I not taken her would have humiliated her to tears! Horrible places they are,I wouldn't let my dead cat stay there! Flag for moderationAdd a comment |
