Utica Police highlight importance of sticking to the speed limit

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - With schools across the Mohawk Valley set to start back up next week, Tuesday the Utica Police Department was reminding drivers to pay attention to the posted speed limits.

Public Safety Commissioner Dan Labella says if the public understands how police work is done, for example using the lidar gun to catch speeders, the public may in fact follow the law.

Members of the public played police officer Tuesday on the Parkway in Utica. They got a chance to track speeders, and boy were there plenty. Members of the Utica Police Department allowed the public to use their lidar gun. It works like a radar gun, but more accurately.

The lidar gun allows for police to pick out a single car, in a group, and track their speed. Police say now is a good time to inform the public about how serious they are about catching speeders, since school will open back up next week.

It's a good time to create some awareness as to speeders and our speed limit in our city, as well as letting the public have some fun with the lidar gun and showing how we implement the tickets that are being issued and what basis we do that on," Labella says.

I called the "non emergency" line of UPD and the officer on the other end was very rude. He told me that I would have to call back because he had emergencies going on. HELLO - that is why I called the non-emergency line which IS listed in the phone book. His attitude was terrible. He seemed to mock what I was calling about, which in fact was a non-emergency. All I wanted to do was park on the street while my driveway dried, without getting a ticket. Needless to say I didn't call back.

i just settled numerous tickets, got 10 pts on my license in the last 18 months, paid about $1000 in fines plus now I have to pay a DMV assessment fee of $200/year for the next 3 years. all for speeding. by paying the tickets we just keep giving the cops more money to write more tickets. one more ticket and i'm off the road.

in addition to them not using turn signals and rolling through stop signs....how about all the police who are talking on their cell phones while driving? using the computer while driving? talking to dispatch while driving? although some of these incidences might be work related, shouldn't they pull over to the side of the road while using these devices?? i mean, isn't there a law about using "hands free" devices only??

I fully appreciate what you said and it makes sense. However, I was wondering of you could tell me why I see UPD vehicles routinely drive through stop signs, not roll, unless 20 miles an hour is a roll. (Mostly on the corner of Jefferson Ave. and Blandina St. Also turn signals seem not to work in any UPD vehicles. To be fair that is also a problem in many other police vehicles I have had in front of me. Is it a sense of entitlement, training, or just setting a terrible example?

yes, you do mind. That's why you call the calls you get nonsense. I've dealt with you guys alot over the last couple of years and next time instead of doing the right thing and setting an example, I will resolve the matter myself. Because you guys do mind and consider most of your calls nonsense, when in fact they are not. So I don't sign any petitions for you guys to get raises.

Maybe UPD will take this a step further and allow the public to perform more of their duties.....like crack house raids, personally I'd love to use a Taser.

Unfortunately, there isn't much time to catch speeders in many of your neighborhoods, because the Police are taking a high volume of calls. Most of the calls are nonsense. A lot of these people can't figure out how to cope with simple problems and are looking for someone to talk to (not that I mind). Then, you have your every day callers (WHO DON'T PAY TAXES) that take up all our time and prevent us from patrolling the neighborhoods of those that pay taxes. This is out of control.

Why is it that they allow sport bikes to fly, and I mean fly, up and down Genesee street during the summer and you never see one pulled over, too much trouble to go after them?

You wanna catch some speeders? Park your cars at Ridgewood Plaza on Oneida St in S. Utica! These cars cruise at a "LEISURELY" 45-55 MPH and the only cops you see are the ones parked in the driveways of friends, family,or their own! You got the cute little toys, NOW USE THEM!!!

Maybe UPD should use it on 1000 block of St. Vincent Street by the Park, the speeding/drug sales in the park area are out of control
