Colleges create programs to help ease freshmen transition

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Hundreds of thousands of college freshmen are already on campuses all across America or will soon be headed away for the first time. The tough parts do not include classes or grades but fitting in and adapting to living on their own.

When freshmen show up to campus, they are met by several helping hands and a wide variety of activities they can take part in during the first week. Advisers say it is those activities that help the freshmen make the smoothest transition. From move-in day to the first day of classes, that is when advisers say is the most critical time for freshman to get adjusted.

In order to help, college campus have several events lined up for students to interact. Advisers say the interaction is key to help students, especially freshmen, make friends and find others who have similar adjustment needs.

At Utica College, officials say it is typically that first week when students start to come to advisers with questions. Rich Racioppa of the Office of Student Success said, "We try to reach out to them before they need to reach out to us. We know one of the things we can do if we can catch them we can take care of a very small issue we can have that all handled and their on their way before it gets to be a bigger problem."

Orientation and other welcoming events, at least at Utica College, last roughly a week, giving freshman a lot of time to make that smooth transition.
