Rising from the ashes: Moody's Polaris in Newport prepares to get back in business

By EVAN WHITE

NEWPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - Imagine waking up one morning, only to see your lifelong business burn down. That's what happened to Bruce Moody of Newport, who took a powerless moment turned into one of strength.

Only debris remained of Bruce Moody's old shop - a building that stood for 25 years filled with generators and snowmobiles. It was decimated by a fire in March, and now five months later, with the help of his friends, Moody says he's back on track.

Less than 50 yards from the rubble is a new building that's now filled with newer equipment.

Moody's still working on this building which he bought shortly after the fire, but says it's a major improvement over what he had five months ago.

He estimates 200,000 in losses from parts to the former building itself.

Operations were immediately moved here, to Moody's home, where friends and neighbors helped continue his business, while he dealt with damage control - all of these people, simply volunteered to help.

"I didn't even have to get them, they just volunteered, they said what can we do for ya, a hammer and a nail," Moody said.

And that help certainly proved useful.

As for the cause of the fire, Newport's Fire Department was unable to determine it - something Moody calls unnerving, simply not knowing, what happened.

Despite the fire, the service center of the old building has remained fairly intact.

Currently, Moody is using it to store some of his extra equipment, and he plans to keep the property for another year.
