Red Cross volunteers to head to Gulf Coast

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Six local volunteers are preparing to head south in preparation of a potential landfall by Hurricane Gustav.

The national chapter of the Red Cross called on five volunteers to head to New Orleans and one to Houston to help with the storms aftermath.

They will serve in a variety of roles. Everything from fundraising to emotional support. Utica chapter's Executive Director Andria deLisle-Heath says it is important for people to support their efforts.

"Everyone should help the American Red Cross help everyone in the country. It is a statement that just makes sense we want to do a really good job helping the people in the south if this hurricane wreaks the havoc that it could," deLisle-Heath said.

The volunteers expect to spend about three weeks in the south.
