Driver crashes into McDonald's in Herkimer

WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A big surprise for an elderly man at a local McDonald's, as his car crashes into the restaurant.

According to Herkimer Police, a car slammed into the Mcdonald's in herkimer a little after six on Saturday.

Investigators say the driver thought he had the car in reverse but it was actually in drive. There is some damage to the front of the store.

Managers there have closed the restaurant until it can be inspected by engineers to be sure it is structurally sound.

"young drivers are more of a threat than the old ones" argument here. This is not a matter of young vs. old, but a matter of having the physical ability to control the car, and the state of mind where you are aware of your surroundings.

This is a serious thing, I was hit by an elderly lady in Little Falls in the CVS parking lot as she was backing out of a parking space. Luckily I wasnt hurt bad enough to be hospitalized, but she drove off like nothing happened. I notified the police and showed them the bruise on my leg from her car, and come to find out is all they did was pull her over, and told her to be more careful. Now my question is, what if it was a kid or a women with a baby stroller. What would have happened then?

How about this, I was watching TV one night, "a cop gone bad" going on a call and accidently try to reverse his car and he went forward instead? If it happens to him, it happens to anyone and no matter how old you are.

I feel sorry for the gentleman who hit the building. We will have all made mistakes that is why they call them, accidents. As for making it a young vs old driving contest I get more upset with the 30 to 50 crowd I am in that crowd and I find our age group is worse than the young and the old, guess what we DONT own the road. As for McDonalds this will bring them in more money from the looky lous. I am glad no one was hurt and and I hope the gentleman in the accident is doing ok.

Hmmm...why is it that someone who's intoxicated is not supposed to be driving, while someone who didn't have the presence of mind to know which GEAR his car was in was allowed to? Unfortunately, as alcohol dulls the senses, so do the causes of aging. It's sad that the militant old people who want their "right" to drive aren't concerned with the safety of others.

He thought he was in reverse? Who thumps on the gas going backwards in a parking lot-hard enough go up over a curb and poke through a building? I hope they give him a driving test and possibly revoke his driving privileges.

He was just sick of wait in the drive thru for 20 minutes for his food. He thought it would be faster if he went inside to get it.

senior citizens aren't the only drivers that do stupid things. I have seen so so many younger drivers take their life and that of others in their hands and think nothing of it. Please think about what all of you do. No,I am not a senior driver.

How many times do we have to read about these old yahoo's that think they got their car in reverse when it's actually in drive and then instead of hitting the brakes they mash the gas. Good thing nobody was killed or hurt. There should be a mandatory road test every two years for anyone over 70 that wants to keep driving.

What a surprise. Not the first time an old person drove into a building, into on coming traffic, or just happened to forget that a stop sign was there. Something should be done about this. Their kids need to step up and start taking their cars away from them. Give your parents rides, they did it for you.
