Police: Fatal hit and run could have been accidental

By GARY LIBERATORE

LEWIS, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Police investigators say they are now looking into the possibility that a Holland Patent woman found dead along a road two weeks ago may have actually fell out, or jumped out of the vehicle she was a passenger in.

The body of 54-year-old Debra Royce was found by a passer-by along a rural road in the Town of Lewis around 11:30 the night of August 20.

After a three day search, police arrested 41-year-old Royce Beck of Ava and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say Beck was driving a pickup truck and Debra Royce was a passenger.

Investigators are now trying to determine whether Royce got out of the car while pulled over, then was struck by a vehicle, whether it be Beck's or someone else's, or whether Royce fell out or jumped out of the moving car and was killed that way.

So far, Beck only faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

The police need to talk to her son's friends, they were there and they know what happened. It was one of her son's friends that called 911, so either the police know the truth or they are not being told the truth, put these kids in jail without bail until they tell the whole truth of what happened and don't let them out until they do.

This guy had some culpability in this situation. I don't care if he was only 40% culpable, then give him 40% of a murder sentence. Even if Ms. Royce jumped out of the vehicle, the question is WHY!!! Why did she so deperately want to get away from this scumbag who has a criminal record a thousand miles long. This guy is a drug addict and has been imprisioned at least 3 times. He's garbage and needs to be off our streets. Hold him accountable for something!!!!!!

and this whole time they threw this big manhunt because he's a convicted felon, when in fact it could have been an accident. Wow. Talk about an over reaction on the part of law enforcement, not a big prejudiced are they?
