Utica Police Department looking for new officers

By GARY LIBERATORE

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica Police are looking for some new officers to help fight crimes here in the city.

The Utica Police Officer exam is coming up, and the department here is looking for a few good men and women to take it, pass it, and become an integral part in keeping our city safe. The exam will take place on November 15th.

"We put the word out early so that people have time to consider if it's something they want to do, and it also helps us get a better list because the earlier we put the word out the more people take the test, we have a better candidate field." says Deputy Chief Michael Bailey.

Police say even if you take the police officer exam and pass it, you still have some work to do, "There's physical requirements, you have to pass agility, you have to pass psychological screen, a drug test, you have to have a clean record," Bailey adds.

The officers that make the cut will be replacing retiring officers or fill a void if a promotion takes place, an opening comes up. The key to becoming an officer is the exam, and study guides will help.

"There's a lot of reading comprehension on the test, so if you're good at reading comprehension, that will help you. If you're not so good, go find some study guides," Bailey recommends.

If you would like to take the exam, you can pick up an application and a study guide either  at the Police Department or over at City Hall.

Its not easy being a Utica Police Officer true but remember there are others out there that work in the commuinty with the public also and put there lives in danger and don't carry a gun, ems, gas and lights, delivery men, so they must be lucky to be able to do there job well. Not saying it isnt hard

now adays all you need is to speak some other language, be a minority, or have some type of criminal history. As long as you live in the city you are a shoe in.
