WHITESTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - An 18-year-old Utica woman is in the hospital and has been charged with DWI after a one car accident late Friday night.

Oneida County Sheriff's deputies say 18-year-old Nicole Haynes was traveling south on River St. in Whitestown, near the mohawk River Bridge, when the car she was driving swerved and ran off the road. The vehicle went down a ditch and struck several trees before coming to rest on its driver's side. Haynes had to be cut out of the vehicle using the jaws of life.

Passenger 18 year old jessie Fleury was also injured in the crash and transported to St. Elizabeth's medical Center.

As of now Haynes has only been charged with DWI, although additional charges are pending.

maybe the age at which you can drive should be raised. that way if your going to drink and drive you can be charged as an adult. too many people get dwi's and get away with it. all punishment should be the same

just wanted to comment to a friend, how many friends of Nicoles knew she was drinking and then driving and could have stopped her from doing this. They also should feel hurt but at your age people think it is funny to go get drunk and have fun and don't think twice about anything else.i had my fun when i was younger but i learned when many others didnt.after having lost a close relative by a drunk driver i am against it completely now.

Okay Nicole is my friend and I'm not going to sit here and watch people call her stupid. Yeah she made a wrong move but you don't even know here to call her stupid. You can't judge a person by what you hear you have to know the person to understand a person. Yes it was wrong move to drink and drive but everyone makes mistakes and they learn from them and i know this will change nicole and make her think before she acts. Stop talking bad about her and hope for a full recovery.

I agree with reality, stupid people will drink and drive because it is so cool. Killing yourself or other people is not cool. People need to wake up and follow the law.

Age will never correct this problem but showing that we do not tolerate underaged drinking and punish people to the max might, but then again you get these smart and hungry lawyers and families with alot of money and ties to the community that get away with this bull. I feel if an officer or another law official is found to have helped a driver that has been found drinking off with a lower penalty or even no penalty at all that official should be found guilty and serve a prison term and big fine

Was she at the Venue on Whitesboro Street? I hope she gets more than a slap on the wrist and her passenger recovers without any lasting effects of this accident.

Stupid people are going to drink and drive no matter what the legal age is. Just like they will drink even if they are under that age, its just a tad bit harder to get the alcohol but still do-able. Raising the age to 30 would be ridiculous. I'm 26, married, stay at home mom to my kids, own my home and your going to say I'm too immature to know to take a taxi if I go out just because I'm under 30? There's always going to be dumb people out there, don't group people by their age.

Changing the drinking age will not stop dwi's.The problem is not with the alcohol it's the people not understanding or just plain dont care that a few drinks turn's an automobile into a very dangerous object.

The police should investigate from where she got the alcohol. This 18 yr old as well as the person who supplied them should be punished.

And people want to lower the drinking age to 18? Why? So more stupid people will drink & drive? If anything the government should RAISE the drinking age, say to 30! Maybe by the time a person is 30 i this day in age, they will be more mature.
