Hanna: Arcuri claim of cutting taxes is full of holes

When Congressman Michael Arcuri claims he's never met a tax he didn't like, that's nothing more than a "box of donuts," said Richard Hanna, his opponent in November's election.

"It's full of holes," Hanna said.

The Hanna campaign released information today that showed that Arcuri voted to raise taxes, extend taxes and increase fees 21 times in his less then two years in office. Since January, 2007, Arcuri voted for outright tax increases or extending taxes 10 times.

These include:

HR 3920, 10/31/2007 - extend for three years the payroll tax that funds unemployment benefits
HR 976, 9/25/2007 - raise taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products
HR 976 Veto override, 10/18/2007
HR 3963, 10/25/2007 - increase tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products
HR 6, 1/18/2007 - limit tax benefits and require royalty payments from certain oil and gas companies
HR 3056, 10/10/2007 - new tax on individuals who renounce their citizenships
HR 2419, 7/27/2007 - end the ability of foreign companies operating in the U.S. to shift income to a third country
HR 3162, 8/1/2007 - raise the federal tobacco tax by 45 cents a pack
HR 2881, 9/20/2007 - raise general aviation fuel tax and commercial aviation fuel tax
HR 2642, 5/15/2008 - a 0.47 surtax on modified adjusted gross income above $500,000 per year for individuals and $1 million for couples

He voted to increase fees 6 times including:

HR 3580, 9/19/2007 - allow FDA to collect user fees from prescription drug manufacturers
HR 2262, 11/1/2007 - Mining companies would be required to pay royalties for hard-rock mines on federal land equal to 8 percent of gross income for new mines
HR 3221, 8/4/2007 - require oil and natural gas producers who pay no royalties on leased federal land to agree to renegotiate their leases or pay a new fee
HR 2419, 5/14/2008 - extending customs user fees in the farm bill
HR 2419, Veto override, 5/21/2008 - extending customs user fees for agriculture

And while Arcuri claims he never saw a tax that he liked, he voted against cutting taxes 5 different times. Tax cuts he voted against include:

HR 5351, 2/27/2008 - Opposed extending the marriage penalty tax relief and child tax credit.
HR 5719, 4/15/2008 - Opposed tax enforcement to stop illegal aliens from getting tax breaks
HR 3648, 10/4/2007 - Foreclosure tax relief - he opposed tax cut to strike sections to change tax treatment of gains from the sale of a primary residence
HR 6049, 5/21/2008 - Opposed extending the package of expiring tax credits through 2013
2007 CQ House Vote 377 Fiscal 2008 Budget Resolution - blocks tax cuts, establish a "trigger" mechanism in the House that could block tax cuts if a projected fiscal 2012 surplus does not materialize

In all, Arcuri said yes 21 times for higher taxes and fees.

"Mike Arcuri 's record in Washington is very clear," said Richard Hanna. "Judging by his House votes, he's never seen a tax increase he didn't like. He votes his party line 98 percent of the time."

"People in this community are tired of career politicians like Mike Arcuri who do one thing in Washington, and then tell us something else here at home," concluded Hanna.
