Legislators Push For Heating Help

By EVAN WHITE

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) -  With home heating oil costs having risen fifty percent over last year according to the New York Energy Research Development Authority, some legislators are pushing for the Home Heating act of 2008 (A.11590).

Assembly Energy Committee Chair Kevin Cahill (D 101st District) and Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito (D 116th District) discussed the matter at a morning news conference.

They are urging Governor David Paterson to call a special legislative session so that legislators can review the bill, which passed through the Assembly in June.

The bill would amend the state tax law and tax large oil companies 2% on gross receipts.

It would also force oil companies to pay a windfall recapture tax of 4% times the excess of the average retail sales of motor fuel over two dollars.

Finally, the bill would prohibit oil companies from passing additional costs to consumers.

September 12th, Governor David Paterson added $49 million dollars for low-income energy efficiency programs in addition to calling for federal help.

Cahill says more must be done, "he has bought us some time but the heating season now that it has begun and the senate hasn't acted, we now have a few more weeks to act before somebody suffers."

State Senator Joe Griffo, a Republican, had this to say in response:

"Millions of New York State families are facing difficult times, we want to help as many of them as we can that are facing this issue, there is no way you want people to have to make choices between essentials or heating your home."

Griffo is open to returning for a special session, but pointed to the "home heating relief act," a bill that passed through the Senate in June and has not been addressed by the Assembly.

lets change the economy by giving everything to those who work and nothing to those who dont want to work who rely on welfare and lets really see how the economy changes lets make the whole system totally opposite then what it is now working people get turned down for everything but the people who dont want to work and rely on welfare get all the help i begin to think people who live off the system live better than the working people because everything is handed down to them

alot of us who do work could use the help but as always we will be turned down do to us making $5.00 more than we should to qualify for the help. they need to start cutting welfare and have them get a p/t job and do something for themselves, and also limit how many children they will pay for per family, this way you wont see all these poor children who's parent get money for them and use it for other things ,this would free up some money to help the working families who are in need.

"Instead of crying why don't you put your energy into trying to make things better for all." People like you are part of the problem. It is time to lose the social welfare that to many of you liberals depend on and often let people make a career out of. What are you doing to help those of us that work for a living? Nothing is my guess.

It's not always the dead-beats that don't want to work that are helped by these programs. Some families work but don't make enough to meet the rise in heating, energy, food...Many hard workers need the help too. Instead of crying why don't you put your energy into trying to make things better for all.

Ok...heres food for thought, How about stopping the price-gouging by the heating companies so the taxes could be used more proficently?

its really nice that patterson decided to dedicate millions of dollars for heap without knowing where the money would come from. then a few days later he passes it onto consumers with a monthly increase in their utility bills. what is our government going to do for the working people. im sick of seeing deadbeats get free medical, rent, food and utilities. if they were cut off 100 % from all benefits or they would starve or freeze you would be suprised how fast they would get a job !!!!!!!!!!!!
