(WKTV) - The United States may be closer to offshore drilling after the House voted Tuesday night to permit drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. That is if the Senate agrees.

The bill would reverse $18 billion in oil industry tax breaks and impose new oil and gas royalties to further renewable energy development. Congressman Michael Arcuri voted in favor of the measure saying, "This bill is a culmination of months of urging our leadership to bring a common sense energy solution including drilling and alternative energies to a vote in the House."

Meanwhile, Arcuri's opponent, Richard Hanna said, "The bill has passed, but I guarantee it will be held up until next year. We need aggressive action now, not tomorrow."

The bill has yet to be voted on in the Senate.
