New Hampshire man quits job to cross country in horse-drawn wagon; rides through Herkimer

By KRISTEN COPELAND

EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - He sold his house, he sold his truck, he quit his job. Bob Skelding, of New Hampshire, is riding across country in a horse drawn wagon. Why? Skelding says the trip is for the fun of it.

Skelding was riding along Route 5 in Herkimer this afternoon. He doesn't have any plans other than to make it down south before the snow falls.

So far Skelding says the trip is "far cooler than anything I could have possibly dreamed of."

Skelding is not exactly "roughing it". In his wagon, he has a full sized bed, kitchen, running water and power.

I had the opportunity to ride with Bob for one day on his journey on Sunday, September 28. He is a nice man, intelligent, and those horses are his "babies". He takes rest breaks for the horses and about a 1-1/2 hour lunch break where he unharnesses the team, feeds them, and lets them rest. We went from Rt 5 on to Rt 31 and as many times as I have gone down that road, I saw things I hadn't seen before. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and thank him for the unique opportunity.

the negative comments about this. This man sold everything for an adventure. It doesn't get anymore risk taking than that. Those horses are loving the work, that is what they do. This man is my hero! I can only aspire to follow my heart someday - today I am to damn fearful to live to my fullest capacity.

I think its wonderful for this man to have the determination to follow his dreams. Its too easy to fall into a rut of everyday life. You go Bob. Hope your trip is everything you could ever have dreamed of.
