Utica residents forced out as St. Elizabeth Medical Center expands office space

By EVAN WHITE

UTICA, N.Y. - St. Elizabeth Medical Center has made major changes to its hospital which include revamping its parking lot and building a new emergency department. Some nearby residents on Ballantyne Brae are not happy with other changes they say are in the works.

Pattie Rizzo, who lives directly behind the hospital's parking garage in a home (similar to ten others owned by St. Elizabeth on the street) said several residents will not have their leases renewed by the medical center.

Houses numbered 12,14,16 and 18 on Ballantyne Brae could be turned into offices for hospital staff, according to Rizzo.

Rizzo and one other resident were told in April that they would need to move by the end of September. They say they were given the option to move out in a couple months later, but preferred to leave now instead.

Rizzo says she and her late father were promised roughly 20 years ago by the medical center that her family was free to stay for the rest of their lives.

"When you think you will be somewhere forever, you treat it like you will be there forever," said Rizzo.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center would not comment on specific leases but says there are leases that will not be renewed, a spokesperson offered this statement:

"The medical center has had discussions with neighbors and welcomes concerns. We do get back to them. We have worked over the last 3-4 months on general concerns and have responded. If they (residents) have other concerns, they should contact me directly. We encourage and welcome any concerns." Catherine Hanover Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations and Public Affairs. (315) 798-8100

Rizzo is still packing and doesn't know where she will move, Brennan and her blood sister, Sister Rose Ellen have moved to another home nearby, we were unable to contact the third resident involved.

The section of Ballantyne Brae is zoned as a residential one family house area, and there have been no applications received by the City of Utica requesting a change.

The hospital wouldn't comment on what will ultimately happen here.

MKS read the story. It says the area is zoned residential and that no applications have been received by the city to change the zoning.

When did STE's get the zoning laws changed on that street? Where is the proof that the area can be changed from residential to business. The hospital does everything very sneaky so residents in the area can't complain. The residents need to see the proof of the changes made.

Get over it. Sorry that you've had 6 months to find a new home, but your government has decided to cut medical reimbursements in huge numbers. Middle management at E's are losing thier jobs. St E's does alot to keep direct caregivers in place to continue providing care to everyone, no matter if they have a home or not. You've had it pretty nice up to now, move on. The only other thing St E's should do is cut the fat at the top. Way too many VP's. Even our country only has ONE.

Boo Hoo- she was told in April that she had till the end of September to move out. She was given plent y of time by her Land lord to find another place to live. She chose to procrastinate and now whines to the press because her landlord is the hospital. Most tenants whose landlords decide not to renew their leases only get 30 days. If she was promised that she could live there forever she should have gotten it in writing. If this was a regular person this would n't have even made the news

The hospital is motivated by self-preservation and greed. They see only the color green and will destroy anything that gets in their mission. The care there stinks and you literally take your life in you hands if you are admitted there. Seek care elsewhere.

I am not sure why this is a news story. don't landlords all across the city refuse to renew leases all the time? I heard the 3 residents in these two homes were given 6 months notice that their lease would not be renewed. sounds to me like they were lucky to have such a thoughtful landlord since most people get kicked out on the street in 30 days!

I don't feel bad for these people. Many people across the country are asked to leave rental properties. Boo hoo. Go find another apartment.

Hey WKTV. I am a landlord in the process of evicting a tenant. Do you want to cover this story. Really WKTV......if you are having a slow day, why don't you select one of the many local events or happenings and cover that. Thanks for forcing your viewers to watch such an insignificant "story".

They rent from Hospital owned homes? So the problem is where? The hospital owns the buildings and they don't want to renew the lease. It's their right isn't it? Is this a free society? Can'y a homeowner do what he wishes to his property? Get a grip Miss Rizzo.
