Neighbors of Vernon murder victim remember him as good neighbor

By EVAN WHITE

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's been a long road since the January death of Joseph Giacona Jr. State Police, along with the Oneida County District Attorney's Office, put the pieces together and an arrest was made.

Giacona's 13-year old son, who made the call for help that deadly day, is now being held without bail for his alleged role in the incident.

Joseph Giacona III told police, back in January, that he found his dad dead on the couch of his Vernon home.

Giacona's neighbors he was a good neighbor, but no one seemed to know about his son. And while neighbors try to move on, they say they will never forget the good man they say is no longer with them.

"He was a good mechanic," said one neighbor. "He was along to help anyone in the neighborhood out with whatever they needed."

"He helped my husband a lot, do repair work and that's it," said another.

When one neighbor was told of the suspect being charged - Giacona's own son - the neighbor simply shrugged his shoulders.

That neighbor said he'd go about his business regardless - a mood that seemed to reflect the rest of this area.
