WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - 13 year-old Joseph Giacona III was arrested by police Thursday morning before school. Giacona had been attending classes in the Whitesboro district. Police say Giacona moved to Whitesboro to live with his mother.

Authorities say Giacona attended V.V.S Middle School back in January, when he allegedly shot and killed his father. They say it was over the summer months he transferred to the Whitesboro School District.

Police say when Giacona was originally interviewed back on January 24th, hours after he found his father shot, he was interviewed as a witness only. Giacona did not become a suspect until after the investigation started. Even though he was a suspect, he was not charged with anything, so he remained free. However both the V.V.S. and Whitesboro districts were alerted.

"There are school resource officers assigned to both the V.V.S and the Whitesboro district. Those school resource officers were certainly aware of our concerns," said New York State Police Investigator Dennis Dougherty.

Whitesboro superintendent Dave Langone said Thursday, he and the district were aware of the situation, and in contact with police.
