Travel Advisory plan in place for PGA Event
VERONA, N.Y. - The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department, the Oneida Indian Nation Police and the Turning Stone Resort Casino have coordinated efforts to manage traffic for the upcoming Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tournament to be held in the Town of Verona, Oneida County. The Turning Stone Resort & Casino will host the Turning Stone Resort Championship, PGA Golf Tournament, beginning Monday, September 29 through Sunday, October 5, at the Atunyote Golf Club on State Route (SR) 31. This event is expected to draw approximately 35,000 to 40,000 additional people to the Turning Stone Resort & Casino area. As a result, State Routes 365, 31, 5 and Thruway Exit 33 in the Towns of Verona and Vernon will experience higher than normal traffic volumes. Traffic delays are possible on SR 365 between Patrick Road and SR 31 in the Town of Verona; SR 31 between SR 5 in Vernon and SR 365 in the Town of Verona; SR 5 at the intersection of SR 31 in Vernon; and Thruway Exit 33 in Verona. Traffic is expected to be the heaviest Friday through Sunday. The NYS DOT, New York State Thruway Authority and the Turning Stone Resort & Casino have special signing in place to guide motorists to the event site and parking. In addition, mobile cameras will be in place at the intersections of SR 365 with SR 31, Patrick Road and the NYS Thruway interchange 33. These cameras will allow NYSDOT staff to monitor traffic on a real-time basis and modify the signal timing as required to minimize delays. It should be noted that no advertising or business signs are permitted on the highway right-of-way. Removal of these signs will be enforced to ensure the safety of the traveling public and maintain traffic in the most efficient manner. Motorists are urged to be alert and use caution when traveling on these routes during this event and to pay particular attention to all traffic control devices, including traffic signals, signs, variable message signs, NYSDOT personnel and police officials.
