Blustery weather no match for golf fans at Turning Stone Resort Championship

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - Pro golfers have returned to Central New York, and so have the fans - braving the wind and rain to watch their favorite players hit the greens.

An umbrella blew across the 18th fairway at one point during the afternoon, but it didn't interfere with golfers putting there, even though the wind terrorized fans all day.

Winds were only expected to reach 20 mph, but peaked around 25 mph according to PGA Tour Meteorologist Wade Stettner.

With temperatures not expected to climb much in the coming days, will the brave ones coming out today return?

"No, just Thursday and Friday," said golf fan Mark Robarge. "Going back to Connecticut on Saturday."

"I don't think so, not at this point no," said Richard Connelly, a fellow golf fan. "And that's the reason - I don't want to be out here in this stuff. It's a real test today."

The blustery, raw weather isn't a safety threat unless lightning is involved, which would force an evacuation of the course.

A storm system in Syracuse Wednesday, which tour officials thought might come to Atunyote nearly forced an evacuation, but officials found that nothing that serious had occurred Thursday.
