Marcy residents discuss feelings toward possible semiconductor plant

Marcy residents speak out regarding their opposition to the possibility of a Nanotech Center near their homes. (ERIC TUTTLE / WKTV)

By JOLEEN FERRIS

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Even as Marcy residents stood up in their town hall to oppose the location of a semiconductor plant near their homes, local economic development officials are in Europe trying to lure one to the Marcy site.

The Mohawk Valley Edge and the New York's Empire State Development Corporation conducted a hearing this morning at Marcy Town Hall. A handful of Marcy residents advised their neighbors not to stand in the way of progress and to embrace the project. A man whose property borders the site expressed concerns about pollution, increased traffic and noise.

The ESDC will review all the public comments during their meeting in New York City later this month. Then they will notify the EDGE as to whether or not they'll release the first $10 million of $20 million committed by the state to the construction of the semiconductor plant.

Did you ever notice that it is usually the retired - the ones who had a life here (when there were jobs, etc.) - that are most abject to progress and the chance for someone else to have a life...

let's pool our money and send those opposed to one of the chip fabs on the west coast for a tour - new buildings, new jobs, new homes, news businesses - stop the ignorance of "pollutants" and show these people what CAN be in our area. of course I'd be more than happy to move my family to the west coast for one of these jobs - and come home over the holidays to hear the same old excuses that are moving us backward and preventing us from moving forward

This is the only opportunity for this area to change is a chip plant. There will be a lot of other businesses started that help feed a chip plants needs.

Hope-are you one of these ignorant people who doesn’t understand the capability of new technology? Ground water contamination! That’s a sure reason to not explore an idea that will bring thousands of great jobs to this area. Let’s just sit around with our crappy economy in an area that our children are running away from. We’ll have pristine water-of course there won’t be anyone left to care. Those who don’t grasp the potential of a nano center here must have zero education. I pity your ignorance

Of course someone's opposed to it. It may mean more jobs that actually pay a good salary and a reason for our young people to stay here. Keep hindering ANY type of progress and see what you end up with - more vacant lots and a population age demographic shifted toward old people. Try supporting something positive for the Mohawk Valley for a a change. Give our young people a reason to stay here (no...Walmart doesn't count).

Not more than two days ago, mike acuri talked about making the area a mini-silicon valley.. He is as much to blame for the courting of these high polluters from Europe here as anyone. It's always the people that live the farthest away from the pollution that want to promote it. That being the case, let's run the NYRI line right through arcuri's backyard on Crestway. Good job, Mike.

This is just another example of why we will never progress in this area - we simply do not want it enough. One of these days, outsiders are going to simply get sick of expressing interest because we always give them a hard time.

All of the time people complain abou the lack of opportunity and jobs in this area. Then, when opportunity knocks, people want to either ignore it or slam the door in its face. No amount of investment into this area will overcome the lack of vision these people have. They'd probably rather see the semiconductor facility in China, and then complain about another company shipping jobs overseas. That's because in China if you get in the way they might herd you into a stadium and execute you.

I'm amazed at what happens when companies consider moving to this area. As soon as someone announces that they wish to build a facility somewhere there are people who pop up and start opposing from the outset. So many members of the graduating class at SUNY IT that I was a part of have left the area. Why oppose something because it changes things for the better for us? This is not NYRI trying to shove things down our throats, it is a company that is looking for a good place to locate.
