Taxpayers vote on Holland Patent capital project for second time

By PAT BAILEY

HOLLAND PATENT, N.Y. (WKTV) - The polls in the Holland Patent School District are open until this hour, as taxpayers are vote on a second attempt, by the district, at a capital project. The project is just shy of $11 million, and would repair buildings and approve a new multipurpose athletic field.

As of noon Tuesday, officials at the Holland Patent School District say they had over a thousand voters, now that's just 5 hours after the polls opened. Some voters say that is a good thing for passing the capital project, others say it's a bad thing for the chances of this capital project passing.

School district officials say by 3:30 Tuesday afternoon over 1,400 taxpayers already cast a vote.

There was a steady line going into the Holland Patent Middle School all afternoon. Some voters we talked with, said they have never seen this much interest, some calling it controversy, over a capital project vote.

"Am I surprised? Yes and no. So it really depends on how people find the benefits from it. Some haven't any benefits from it, some do," said voter Lynda Ferris. "I think at this time, this particular time, is a bad time to have it there is just too many things and the economy is so bad," added Rita Heyscue.

The $10,995,000 capital project would put a new roof on the school's bus garage, and clean up contaminated soil around the same building. If passed, it will also allow for a brand new multi-purpose athletic field that could accommodate at least 4 different types of sports, including hosting track and field events.

This is the second attempt at trying to pass a capital project in Holland Patent. If this one gets voted down it will have to be shelved for some time, by law before another can go up to vote.

Have you driven thru Clinton latel?? They AREN'T "flocking" there, their RUNNING AWAY! They have some of the highest taxes in the area, along w/NH & Sauquoit! Come on & get real. There are NO JOBS in this area,so people won't be "flocking" to any area & I highly doubt a turf field would be a major factor in moving into a district maybe the education system MIGHT. Sports aren't gonna get them a job when schooling is all said & done. Grow Up!!

Don't people realize that by the time the school does their new budget for next year, with our weak economy, the cost of the repairs that we need will probably double. If we were in fact entitled to state aid, we should have taken while it was there. Who knows what the new taxes will be next September.

So get off your duff and volunteer to help spruce up the "one of the worst looking schools". But if it had a nice Football Stadium next to it that would be ok? You kill me. lol

1000 people signed a petition because they believed the issue held enough merit to be re-examined and therefore, voted on again. Their signature on the petition did not indicate a yes or no vote.

When and if the roof caves in, the board members who tried to scam this district into paying for their ridiculous mega footballplex better be there to suck it up and credit for the way they forced the needed repairs to be delayed.

Hey Ralph, save the political party nonsense for November. This vote has nothing to do with politics or affiliation! How does supporting this make one rude? Yes, the economy is bad (did you help contribute by spending beyond your means to show your kids how much you "love" them?) Okay, that was rude! And, no, this cannot be brought up again for several years so the field is a dead issue...at least I hope it is! BTW, you will still have to pay higher taxes- start reigning in the liberal spending

If we are going to attract more families to this area to help increase the tax base (and lower individual costs), we must have a school distrist worthy in every aspect. Real people with real money are looking for rural living .. the infrastructure of the school is one of the primary deciding factors in that decision. Clinton, NH, Sauquoit and the others are way ahead of us on this one and that is why people are flocking to these areas. The downward spiral will continue.

Tough decision .. In the long run, the kids loose out, our community looses out and it WILL cost us more to repair all of the facilities involved when there is a crisis. It is like your health, invest in it now, and it will pay off later ... OR wait for a crisis and it will be more painful and expensive. I think people voted more on emotion and impulse than considering the facts. Too bad for all of us. We have one of the worst looking schools and facilities in upstate NY ..

The community has spoken!! I hope that they can comprehend our decision now. All you "Parents for a change" can go back to your perfect little world where you can give your kids "everything" and tell them the "Bad people" didn't want this nice new field for you. Stop your whinning and maybe this time you see we mean NO!!

The school board over estimates the gullibility of us voters. If we want roof repairs, we must buy into a brand new expensive multi-purpose athletic field. The roof repairs would have won had the school board not mixed a need with a luxury.

I hear alot about the bus garage roof and other repairs - if these were offered separately that would have been an entirely different story. Even the school officials stated that lumping all projects together was the best way to get the stadium aspect to pass. The entire capital project package revolved around this stadium, with second thoughts given to the aud seats, roof repairs, and other maintenance necessities. They will be required soon enough - Can some concerned person start a petition?

Yes, we are in an economic collapse. Don't you realize our taxes will go up more when it comes time to make the repairs that need to get done anyway? I question your ability to comprehend that when the roof falls in on the bus garage, we will be paying more.
