Taxpayers vote down Holland Patent capital project

By PAT BAILEY

HOLLAND PATENT, N.Y. (WKTV) - By close to a 3 to 1 margin, taxpayers in the Holland Patent School District have turned down the proposed $10,995,000 capital project.

2,060 voted No, while 766 voted Yes.

The 2,894 total voters is the largest turnout School District Superintendent Kathleen Davis has seen in her time at Holland Patent.

At 8 p.m. Tuesday night, district officials closed and locked the doors to the Holland Patent Middle School, where the voting took place. The 8 p.m. deadline did not mean the vote stopped, as about 500 people stayed in line until 9 p.m. to finish voting.

Davis says the voters have spoken, and the district will now move on.

"It's time to get about the business of educating our kids. At this point we have to respect that and do what we have to to move forward and maintain with what we have," Davis said.

Davis says if the taxpayers see another capital plan, the proposed multipurpose athletic field will not be part of it. She says that was a big reason why this current proposal was voted down.

"If the voters see anything in May, my prediction would be the contaminated soil and the roofs, and most probably the parking lots at GWF", said Davis. "Those are just general maintenance items".

The 2,894 voters who cast a ballot Tuesday, was more than double the amount of voters in the district's first attempt at this capital project.

you know why i voted no? it was because no matter what my school taxes or my state taxes where going to go up because of the new field. I once played on that field when it was muddy, it wasn't that bad, it was a home team advantage some schools are used to turf and not real grass. the soil does need to be picked up along with the the other needed repairs. but we don't need a stadium and field.

The BOE does NOT represent the 75% (mostly seniors) of the taxpayers who voted. The BOE represents the school district and the children! The fact that there are books is not a lie. Pre-K kids are left behind? How? There is only enough room for one class in the bldg and splitting it into 1/2 days would require 2 times the bussing in the 2nd largest district by area. Are you and the 75% ready to pay more taxes to pay for that gas, insurance, bus driver salaries?????

What happened to the infamous petition that IS public record, but was not released by the secretive school in HP? No, many books MUST stay in the classroom for all to share.Check the HS/

As far as getting rid of four board memebers, let's just start with ONE. It's a shame tha this has pitted a community against each other. To HP admin. keep fighting the good fight, and sonner or later people will realize their mistake in voting no.
