Truck Driver Killed in Thruway Accident

WKTV News

THRUWAY (WKTV) – State Police confirm that one of the drivers of the tractor trailers that collided on the Thruway Wednesday morning was killed. One lane of the Thruway has been opened in both the east and west bound lanes.

The accident occurred near mile marker 237, between Utica and Westmoreland, in the east bound lane of Rt. 90. Troopers report that one of the trucks swerved to avoid debris from a shredded tire and crossed into the opposite lane of the Thruway. The tractor trailers collided head on.

The driver of the truck that took evasive action was killed. The driver’s identity has not been released, nor has which of the two trucks the deceased was driving been identified.

One of the trucks involved was hauling a trailer from Oneida Container in Vernon. The other truck had a trailer from Stevens Transport.

The Deerfield Fire Department was called to the scene to put foam down on fuel spilled in the crash.

State Police continue the investigation at the scene, but are expected to issue a press release soon.

I am reading alot of comments that are moot in point. What all should be posting here are prayers and sympathy to the families involved. Their hearts are hurting enough right now,and God forbid they should happen upon this board and see some of the inanities posted here. The only words we should be offering are of support, kindness, comfort and love to those left behind.

My heart and prayers go out to this trucker's family. Also, I'd like to add that my own guy is a trucker...he offers words of wisdom for other truckers out there. "When you see something on a highway, no matter what it is, do NOT SWERVE to miss it as this will ONLY lead to your 'demise.'" As we've seen from this accident, it has, indeed, led to his death.

When a tire blows or an accident occurs on Interstate 90, it is only seconds before the next vehicle is upon the scene. To say someone should have picked up the Tire is CRAZY!!!!. You try picking up debris in the middle of a 65 MPH highway with high daily traffic counts. Go practice trash pickup on Route 49. GOOD LUCK!!!

I am so so sorry for the families of the victims of this horrific accident. We shouldn't be arguing about what was reported about roads and such. Somebody lost a friend, brother, father, uncle or husband. We should be ashamed of ourselves

You have not updated your story. I worked with Bruce many years. On the morning news you people kept pronouncing his name wrong. How disrespectful !!! Also if some idiot had not stole Bruce's diesel fuel from his tractor on Tuesday night at the Timbar facility on Rt 49,which is also housed by the Sanzone beer distrubitors, Bruce would not have been in this area. To the person who stole his fuel, I hope you rot in hell. All up and down rt 49, diesel fuel is being stolen. Catch these crooks.

Utica OD said it was a large truck tire in the road that the trucker tried to avoid. I would like to know where the State Trooper was to clear the debris from the road? Was he hidden somewhere on the thruway giving out traffic tickets when he should have been out there clearing the road for that truckers safety. Shame on him!!

Listen people, instead of yapping at spelling mistake's, and wrong road name's, and about why one FD was called over another, how about sending out prayer's to the family member's (from BOTH trucker's). It's a hard job to do, and it's horrible that someone died!!My thought and prayer's are with BOTH family's

My husband drives truck and I think your right Debby I think if I were to see "raw" footage of an accident involving a tractor trailer with his company on it, I would be flipping out whether I knew it was him or not. Certainly it could have been handled with a little more finesse that it was. My sympathy goes out to both families. A trucker's life is not any easy one for anyone and I give much respect to those who do it on a daily basis.

why would someone who is not a reporter, cannot spell and has to resort to sarcasm to try to make any kind of point at all. Imagine if a relative of yours drove a truck for a living. Would you want to see stupid unrelated comments. My sympathies to the families of both truck drivers. I am sorry for your loss and pain

you people need to think about what you are writing. It said the accident happened on wednesday morning. Deerfield was called out to put foam down for the fuel spill, maybe they are the only company that has the right stuff for the job. What does it matter what they report the road is you obviously knew what they were talking about. I think news channel 2 does a good job with the news thay report and people should just lay off with it. There are other news channels if you dont like what you read.

You people that write comments make me laugh... All you need to know is that there was an accident on the thruway between two tractor trailers and unfortunetly one person was killed. Who cares about US 90, who responded and when the exact time was... The important information was mentioned! The rest will follow!

The Thruway runs through Utica and is not anywhere close to Deerfield. The Deerfield VFD has been contracted by the Thruway Authority as the primary responders for a particular stretch of the interstate highway. I am curious to know exactly what happened.
