HCCC holds forum on possibility of arming officers
HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Herkimer County Community College held a forum Tuesday night on whether or not to arm the campus peace officers. Multimedia Several other schools have already made the transition The Director of Campus Safety at HCCC, Timothy Rogers, is in favor of arming his officers. "Times have changed, our society has changed, and we need to change with our society," Rogers said. "It's unfortunate we needs these tools, but we need to protect ourselves and protect the people who we're trying to protect, that's why we asked for these tools." College President Ann Marie Murray says she is still collecting data before she makes a decision on where she stands. The New York State University Police are fully armed and have the same training and powers as any police agency in N.Y. I want him to be safe and secure in doing so. If arming Peace Officers or providing them with Police training acts as a detterent to crime than so be it. If you're not committing a crime on campus than you have nothing to worry about by having ARMED Peace Officers and/or providing them with Police training. Many of the Community Colleges sadly use security guards or peace officers. Do students, facility, staff, and visitors deserve less protection than other colleges under the SUNY umbrella? Perhaps the college should release data on how many times there have been incidents with guns involved, or even guns found on campus. Been living in Herkimer for close to 6 years now and haven't heard of a single gun related crime at the campus yet.
