Tormented victims address kidnapper

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Marvin Johnson became enraged when his girlfriend left him for another man. He reacted by hiding in her Chestnut Hills apartment in New Hartford in January and holding her hostage, terrorizing her for two days, forcing her to call her new boyfriend to come over. Today, Johnson was sentenced in Oneida County Court for kidnapping, but not before hearing from both his victims.

"You stood in front of me that day tied to a chair with no clothes on and no dignity left, and told me you were going to kill me. Your reason for this was that you had nothing left to lose. I hope that you take a second to look around the courtroom and see people who care about you who in fact you have disappointed," said the male victim.

Johnson's former girlfriend talked about one of the crimes Johnson was originally charged with, but to which he did not plead guilty.

"And you may think you've gotten away with raping me simply because you won't admit to it but you know the truth; you know you raped me at knifepoint. I just hope at some point over the next 15 years you come to terms with that reality," she said.

Johnson became upset while speaking to the court on his own behalf. His attorney had to take over for him, reading a statement that Johnson had written. But Johnson regained his composure and finished. He said the word, 'remorse' doesn't begin to describe his feelings, and that he, like many others, comes up empty when searching for an answer to the most haunting question of all: 'why'?

"In the countless hours I've pondered this case, the same question has arisen and yet I can't come up with an answer."

Johnson says he will continue to be a model prisoner for the duration of his 15 year state prison sentence, and that he will take advantage of the time to plan a better, more productive life when he is released.

Johnson was originally charged with more than a dozen crimes, but pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping in exchange for the 15-year prison sentence.
