SIDNEY, N.Y. (AP) - New York state police say two truck drivers died Wednesday morning when they plunged into a huge chasm opened up by stubborn rain.
Police say the tractor-trailers were swallowed by a 25 foot deep gap that crosses all four lanes of the upstate highway. The gash is 50 feet wide across Interstate 88 about 30 miles northeast of Binghamton.
Troopers have closed a 30 mile stretch of the highway.
A spokesman at the governor's office says the water washed away a culvert under the highway.
