While Arcuri claims a victory, Election Board says at least a week before absentee results counted
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Democrat Congressman Michael Arcuri is declaring victory in the 24th district race, but the county Board of Elections says it could be late next week, or early the following week, before the results are official.
The board must wait seven days to begin opening Oneida County's 4,500 or so absentee ballots (there are roughly 9000 district-wide). Since the November 11 is a holiday, they can't begin the time-consuming task until the November 12. "We have to open each one individually so it's gonna take a little time, but we're going to try to get more help to go ahead and get the results as soon as possible because we've got over 4400-4500 absentees to read," says Oneida County Democratic Election Commissioner Angela Pedone Longo. Counties throughout the district must wait the same seven-day period for absentees, some of which can be coming from overseas, to arrive. |
