As construction of James Street Police Substation continues, not all optimistic

UTICA, N.Y .- Construction continues on a police substation on James street in Utica.

Public safety officials first announced the building would be built in April, but hasn't been completed yet. The station known as the Thomas M. Lindsey Public Safety Center is expected to serve as a satellite station for police, firefighters and community members.

Police are hoping it deters crime in what is generally known as a high crime area of the city.

Businesses we spoke with are not looking forward to the substation opening. They consider it a deterrent for business. Two business owners who did not wish to be identified, said many people see police cars and head the other way.

Owners say when police simply parked their patrol cars nearby in recent months, business dried up.
