Missing Hunter Survives 2 days in woods; Released From Hospital Within Hours

By NICOLE ESTAPHAN

OLD FORGE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Rich Cote, a friend of John Lawler, says the 76 year-old has been released from the hospital. Cote says beyond being tired, Lawler is in good condition and will be returning to New Jersey on Tuesday.

As friends hugged, elation filled the North Country, and many sighed a big sigh of relief.

"Get your shoulder right under my shoulder," said one of the rescuers, as they placed the discovered Lawler over his shoulder.

They were welcomed words for the New Jersey hunter after being lost for two days.

Lawler was last seen on Saturday morning between Bloodsucker Pond and Woodhull Lake. He was found by search volunteers just northeast of Sand Lake at 11:15 a.m. Monday morning - two-heavily wooded miles from his original location.

And when his hunting buddies first set their sights on Lawler, emotions warmed the chilly air.

You can tell from the wintry crunch under the rescuers' boots that it was not an easy 48-hours.

"It rained Saturday, it froze Saturday night, and snow last night, so he was out in some harsh conditions," said Lt. Doug Riedman, a Forest Ranger involved in the search.

And considering that Lawler is 76-years old...it was against some tough odds he battled...and won.

With rain gear and a map, Lawler pulled through, and Monday he was just as thankful as those who love him were to see him again.

"Thank you," said Lawler as he was rescued. "I have to do something for you guys."

But rescuers say that they already have their thank you.

"Unfortunately, some of the searches we're on don't have good endings - they end up in recoveries," said Greg O'Hara of Adirondack Search & Rescue. "But this one really makes it worthwhile."

As he held Lawler's hand, one rescuer and friend brought him hope and a smile as they loaded Lawler into an ambulance Monday morning.

"I'll see ya John," the friend said.

The missing hunter MUST pay for the costs associated with this rescue. Extra time, money & people power went into the rescue & the hunter should cover the cost. Stupidity isn't FREE!

A seasoned hunter with no gloves, no snacks, or even a water bottle? How about a cell phone? Thank God he's safe.

Shows the attitudes today nicely! 1. Foreign to nature. 2. Dependent. Needs rescuing/protection from others. 3. GPS instead of fail-proof compass. What his family went through? What better way to get an old man in touch with nature! Novels are written of such things. Healthful indeed.

People don't know how easy it is to get lost in the woods. Everything looks the same and there are no landmarks, this particular area is heavily wooded, there are no roads. I am happy for this man. Everyone should take caution from this story, people underestimate the wilderness all the time, and many are not as lucky or as prepared as this man was.

Hey, Have you considered- ok maybe he cant operate a simply thing like a GPS but when you go out into the woods like that have some common sense and bring some survival gear along with you waterproof matches are a good start. And if a PGS is to hard for an old guy to operate then there are simple things like the locaters that skiers use out west in case of avalanche. Not that hard to operate just press one button to turn it on.

Older people have a hard enough time with clap-on clap-off...it is crazy to expect them to work a modern gps system. Just be happy John is now safe, it is truly a miracle

what if you loose signal, batteries go dead, loose along the way, get a grip, he probably had a compass but its easy to get shaken up and not believe it. Kepp your comments how you are a expert woodsman and how everyone else isn't as smart as you. I'm greatful that he was found save. I hope you don't ever find yourself in that situation.

...that a 76 year old man may not have the ability to operate a GPS? A lot of older folks have troubles with technology and electronic gadgets. You need to get a grip.

Hey Frankfort resident: We still do not know what happened to this guy. Was he lost, did he fall, was he injured, did he have a medical condition ? I am a hunter to and do not own a gps device. Some do, most do not. The searchers deserve a lot of credit.
